Perhaps the most honest question before buying: what would you pick if this were your last piano? With instruments that thought holds up better than with almost anything else – a good hammer action from 2010 still plays the same today. What ages is the sound memory, the display, the connection fashions. In short: buy the action, not the features.
Full-size piano: 88 keys, hammer action, touch sensitivity. The lower limit – below it you will hit a wall eventually, and no update changes that.
Higher-grade action: wooden or hybrid keys, or counterweights on top. That is the part you cannot retrofit later.
🎹 How many keys do I need?
From mini keyboard to full piano: pick a size and see it in true proportion to the 88-key standard – with real width and the share of piano pieces actually playable on it. Because that is what a small keyboard costs you: not sound, but repertoire.
Repertoire figures = rough estimate
across common piano repertoire from children’s songs to concert literature. “Curated” means:
an editor or a good learning app has arranged the piece to fit the key count
(e.g. cleverly octave-shifted) – which grows the playable share considerably.
